Effect of Buddhist Meditation on the T Lymphocyte Subpopulation
نویسنده
چکیده
Patients with a reduction in the number of CD4 lymphocytes and functions are prone to bacterial and viral infection. Stress can induce a decrease in CD4 lymphocytes, but the naïve lymphocyte increases after stress management. To evaluate the influence of meditation on the T lymphocyte subpopulation, EDTA blood from 31 monks who meditated and 32 who did not were collected and stained. T lymphocyte subsets were assessed by direct immunofluorescent staining with monoclonal antibodies specific to CD3, CD4 and CD8, and measured by flow cytometer. There was no difference in WBC count, percentage and total count of CD3 and CD8 lymphocytes between either group of monks, but the monks who meditated had a significantly higher percentage of CD4 lymphocytes than those who did not. The percentage of CD3 and CD4 lymphocytes in monks who did not meditate were significantly lower than in normal persons. Chiang Mai Med Bull 2004;43(4):163-168.

A phenomenology of meditation-induced light experiences: traditional buddhist and neurobiological perspectives
The scientific study of Buddhist meditation has proceeded without much attention to Buddhist literature that details the range of psychological and physiological changes thought to occur during meditation. This paper presents reports of various meditation-induced light experiences derived from American Buddhist practitioners. The reports of light experiences are classified into two main types: ...
متن کاملThe Influence of Buddhist Meditation Traditions on the Autonomic System and Attention
Cognitive and neuroscience research from the past several years has shed new light on the influences that meditative traditions have on the meditation practice. Here we review new evidence that shows that types of meditation that developed out of certain traditions such as Vajrayana and Hindu Tantric lead to heightened sympathetic activation and phasic alertness, while types of meditation from ...
متن کاملThe enhancement of visuospatial processing efficiency through Buddhist Deity meditation.
This study examined the effects of meditation on mental imagery, evaluating Buddhist monks' reports concerning their extraordinary imagery skills. Practitioners of Buddhist meditation were divided into two groups according to their preferred meditation style: Deity Yoga (focused attention on an internal visual image) or Open Presence (evenly distributed attention, not directed to any particular...
متن کاملMindfulness meditation training effects on CD4+ T lymphocytes in HIV-1 infected adults: a small randomized controlled trial.
UNLABELLED Mindfulness meditation training has stress reduction benefits in various patient populations, but its effects on biological markers of HIV-1 progression are unknown. The present study tested the efficacy of an 8-week Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) meditation program compared to a 1-day control seminar on CD4+ T lymphocyte counts in stressed HIV infected adults. A single-bl...
متن کاملIs mindfulness Buddhist? (and why it matters).
Modern exponents of mindfulness meditation promote the therapeutic effects of "bare attention"--a sort of non-judgmental, non-discursive attending to the moment-to-moment flow of consciousness. This approach to Buddhist meditation can be traced to Burmese Buddhist reform movements of the first half of the 20th century, and is arguably at odds with more traditional Theravāda Buddhist doctrine an...
